As part of its contribution to the new Government's public sector savings targets, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced on May 24th 2010 the immediate closure of the Low Carbon Buildings Programme grants for heat-led microgeneration.
However, the Government is still developing its proposals on other financial incentives for heat-led technologies, and has indicated that it sees MCS as potentially having a key role to play.
In February 2010, DECC issued a consultation document on its proposed Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. Under that scheme, a range of technologies would be supported, including air and ground-source heat pumps, solar thermal, biomass boilers and renewable combined heat and power. At the micro level, MCS would be used as a criterion for receiving this support. The consultation closed at the end of April. Full details of the proposals can be found on the DECC website.
Financial incentives such as RHI and, for electricity-led technologies, Feed-In Tariffs (FITS), are an important part of the decision to become involved with MCS. However, they are by no means the only benefit.
